Spartan News for January 2006

Hollywierd

For many younger Spartans and fans of Sparta, Frank Miller’s 300 was their first exposure to the powerful true story of Leonidas and the Spartans and their allies who held the “Hot Gates” for three long days against the hordes of Persia. Now Spartans everywhere can look forward to seeing the striking vision of Frank Miller’s graphic novel brought to the big screen. Writer/Director Zack Snyder is working with Miller to film this earlier work by the author of “Sin City”. A terrific Video Journal of the film project is available at: http://movies.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=movies&zu=http%3A%2F%2F300themovie.warnerbros.com

Montana

Our gallant Polemarch, Damysus, leader of the Montana chapter of the Spartan Warband, has met and befriended the fine author of “Gates of Fire”, Steven Pressfield. (Gates of Fire is required reading for all Spartans, or those who aspire to be Spartans!) Mr. Pressfield (an honorary citizen of the City of Sparta) has been invited to attend our wars, and we will be honored in the near future if he can find time in his busy schedule to join us! In the meantime, you can order his book from Amazon.com

Estrella Mountain Regional Park, Goodyear, AZ

The week of February 14 - 20, the Kingdom of Atenveldt will host the annual Estrella War. This event, the largest gathering of armored warriors in the Western United States, will see the Spartan Warband take the field with some 40 armored hoplites! At last year’s event, our debut, in which we impressed many with our splendid appearance, the Spartans only numbered 9 fighting men! What a difference a year makes! If observers were impressed last year, wait till they see us now!
